Basic settings

Network

  • WAN
    • The ISP-supplied modem is a SAGECOM BBox-3 V+.
    • After being connected to the phone line for long enough to self-update, the modem is set in bridge mode.
    • The router WAN port is plugged to the modem LAN port, and the router is configured to handle the PPPoE session.
  • LAN
    • One of the router's Ethernet port is connected to an 8-port gigabit switch.
    • Dynamic DNS references including OpenDNS are updated through the router via DNS-O-Matic.
    • OpenDNS is setup to apply its parental control capability to the whole home network.
    • DHCP is configured for a specific IP range (some devices like the NAS have static addresses) and to push OpenDNS resolvers to all clients.

TO DO: finetune DHCP configuration for a per device use of OpenDNS

TO DO: play with Knot DNS configuration

  • Wi-Fi
    • Wi-Fi can be set up for 2 networks (e.g. private + guest) with different modes (802.11n/ac), bands (2.4/5GHz) and channels.

TO DO: I had to use 2.4 Ghz for both Wifi networks due to bad reception in 5 GHz within the house (poor compared to the Wi-Fi range of the modem itself in 802.11n)

TO DO: test different firewall rules based on which Wi-Fi network is used
